In the last decade, the expansion of sources and theoretical and methodological approaches, the new gender studies and the connection to the history of ideas, of intellectuals, and transnational and global studies, marked a turning point that has been called “new diplomatic history ”. New actors and subjects, new institutions and organizations have renewed research in this field, not only in Brazil, but also throughout Latin America.

In this context, the dossier proposes to bring together articles on diplomacy in the Americas during the 19th and 20th centuries. The use of the plural is intentional, as will be considered the many aspects of a type of activity until very recently understood only in its official aspects and carried out by men.

In this way, the proposal considers works that include the actions of official representatives of the states and also those that examine diplomatic actions outside the state spheres. Based on these principles, several lines will be considered in this call:

  • Official missions in and from America: actors, actions and agendas.
  • Women and their role in diplomatic networks.
  • Scientific and cultural exchanges (literary, educational, sports, etc.).
  • The functioning of diplomatic structures: practices and legislation.
  • Diplomatic sociabilities: relationships within diplomatic representations, between diplomats established in the same territory, exchanges between diplomats and the local population.
