Abstract

This article analyzes the relationship between religious revivals, millenarian expectations, and national identity in the United States between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with special attention to the thought of Charles G. Finney. Drawing on the distinction between progressive and catastrophic millenarianisms, the article examines how revivalist movements contributed to linking individual conversion, moral regeneration of society, and expectations regarding the historical advance of the Kingdom of God. Methodologically, the study combines the history of religion, intellectual history, and conceptual history. The analysis shows that the great revivals fostered providential interpretations of American history and helped consolidate an imaginary according to which the United States occupied a privileged position within the providential horizon of the modern world. The article concludes that the so-called “American millennium” resulted from the articulation between Protestant revivalism, postmillennialism, and the nationalization of the Kingdom of God within the American historical experience.

Doutor em História pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG). Graduado em História (UFMG) e Mestre em Ciências da Religião pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais (PUC Minas). Atualmente é doutorando em Religious Studies pelo Italian Doctoral School of Religious Studies vinculado à Università Degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia. Realizou estágio de pós-doutorado como bolsista PNPD/CAPES no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciências da Religião da Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais.Tem experiência na área de História e Ciências da Religião. Principais áreas de pesquisa: Fundamentalismo religioso, História do Protestantismo e do Pentecostalismo, História dos Estados Unidos e Milenarismos/Messianismos.
